Case Study

Our Timor Leste based partner, HAFOTI, is a grassroots women’s organisation that supports women to become leaders in their families and communities.

Through HAFOTI, women are empowered to be entrepreneurial through growing, packaging and selling food – with income generated supporting group members and their families.

Foods like fried banana chips and virgin coconut oil are produced, packaged and sold to earn extra income for families. Decision-making power is in the hands of the women themselves. They decide how the organisation is run, what products are made, how much is made, how the profit is distributed within the group or whether they save it together.

Women develop strong leadership skills and income is increased for household needs and to cover education costs for their children. Greater leadership skills benefit the wider community and society.
