Case Study
When people flee war or violent situations, special protection and wrap-around support is required for women and children, especially for women facing childbirth.
Among Rohingya refugees from Myanmar seeking protection in Bangladesh, Caritas supports ‘Barefoot Counsellors’ – dedicated volunteers from the Rohingya community who advocate and provide support with health care and protection.
One of those counsellors shares a story: ‘at midnight, I could hear the pain of a neighbour woman in labour. As a protection volunteer of the community, I took the pregnant woman to the health facility outside the refugee camp with my own money. The caesarean delivery was successful; otherwise, a late response could have brought complications and death to the woman."
