From struggle to strength: Aselika’s story

Aselika was 23, caring for her mother, raising her young son, and living on Taveuni Island in Fiji where many families survive on less than $10 a day. Life was hard for the 23-year-old - and her dreams for a better future felt out of reach.

Everything changed when she was offered a place at the Tutu Rural Training Centre, a Caritas-supported programme that has been giving young Fijians hope for more than 50 years.

“At Tutu I learned sewing, screen printing, handicrafts… and how to manage money. But most importantly, I learned to believe I could change my life,” she says.

Today, Aselika runs a small business creating vibrant fabrics and crafts. Her work is sold across Fiji and has even reached buyers in Japan, Australia, the United States and Cuba. What began as survival has grown into a business that supports her family and contributes to her village.
