When the war came to their town, Inna and her five-year-old son, Pavlyk, spent a month sheltering in the basement of a church in Chernihiv. Then they were caught in an artillery It was dark and freezing. Each day there were more explosions.

Volodymyr and his wife were cooking in their backyard in eastern Ukraine when the airstrike hit. The blast blew out their windows. Dust and debris filled the air. “I ran outside and saw my wife lying there, her face covered in blood,” he recalls.
