Caritas has given aid to 200,000 families in Chile in the month after a major earthquake struck. The 8.8-magnitude tremor hit 27 February near Concepción, causing a destructive tsunami, and affecting two million people. Caritas has helped with food and other items such as beds, clothes, medicine and shelter material.
Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand has pledged NZ$25,000 towards the US$8.8 million international Caritas appeal in Chile, and is accepting donations from the public.
Caritas in Chile is using both comic artists and soccer stars to provide relief and support to people in need. Read more ...

Aid Getting Through
Despite the destruction of the Caritas office in Concepción, Caritas within Chile and internationally is mobilising to help those most affected by the 27 February earthquake. Local staff are safe and working from the Bishop's house in Concepción, while Caritas Chile's national office in Santiago is partly damaged but operational. Eight out of 27 dioceses were affected by the quake, which has left an estimated 2 million people in need of support. Read more ...
