Caritas is working with the Archdiocese of Mt Hagen to support the following programmes.

Community Conversations on HIV and AIDS

The programme is training 12 staff and 30 community leaders to implement ‘community conversations’ on HIV and AIDS in the Western Highlands and Jiwaka Provinces of Papua New Guinea. This preventive approach involves entire communities. It deepens understanding, and helps people develop their own solutions to counter higher incidences of HIV and AIDS.  The programme works in culturally appropriate ways and in accordance with Catholic teaching on preventing the spread of HIV and AIDS.

Rulna Community School

Fundraising by New Zealand school children helped develop the school in Rulna Village, Western Highlands Province. The New Zealand Catholic Primary Principals Association (NZCPPA) coordinated the fundraising through mufti-mania days held since 2007. Two double classrooms have been built at Rulna and a teacher’s office is underway. The improvements have produced dramatic results: the school role jumped from 120 to 296 students in 2010.
