Cyclone Evan hit the Pacific in December 2012 causing widespread destruction. Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand worked with partners at Caritas Samoa to help provide food and shelter for those who have been displaced and had major damage to their homes.
Fuatamu lives in Mataio Samuela on Samoa’s South coast. Her family home was badly damaged by the cyclone. She is pictured above with her children and Caritas Samoa volunteer Michael during food distribution.
Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand committed about $100,000 to help the recovery in the Pacific so far, including $75,000 from the New Zealand government. Thank you our donors for your generosity.
We worked with Caritas Australia and Caritas Samoa in a coordinated regional response. Support was also given to the SMSM sisters in Samoa and the island of Wallis where assistance is being given to replant crops.
Please do not collect and send goods to cyclone-affected countries. The best way to help is with financial contributions to source goods locally. See the advice of the NGO Disaster Relief Forum.
