Caritas partners in Fiji are assessing needs as severe floods again hit western Fiji in early April.

Flooding in the Navakai informal settlement, January 2012.

At least four people have died and three boys are missing at sea, while about 8000 people have fled to evacuation centres.

Following severe floods in January this year, Caritas partnered with the Ecumenical Centre for Research, Education and Advocacy (ECREA) and People's Community Network to support people in informal settlements. Food, counselling and social support was provided to about 500 households in the worst-affected Nadi to Ba corridor. Similar support will be provided this time around.

People living in informal settlements are extremely vulnerable and struggle to maintain livelihoods at the best of times. They often miss out on help from public authorities in emergencies.

Caritas is also supporting ECREA in a long-term project to improve livelihoods with informal settlers in the country.
