We work to improve food security and counter gender-based violence in Kenya. We are also currently working with Trocaire (Caritas Ireland) to respond to the worst drought in 60 years.
We have been engaged in partnership with WRC-DI since 2003. They commenced a new three-year phase in 2010. Their work centres on trained community members who advocate for the rights of women and girls. These advocates are also ‘change agents’ who help their communities become more aware and challenge them in situations where gender-based violence is still accepted. Advocates include teachers, elders, religious leaders, members of local government, and hospital staff.
Chiga Parish in eastern Kenya is helping children and extended families affected by the death of one or more parents from HIV or AIDS. At one school of 825 pupils, more than half of the students are orphans. Most students benefit from a school meals programme that ensures they have enough to eat to attend classes regularly. Caritas has worked with Chiga Parish since 2006.
