Employment Relations (Protection of Young People) Amendment Bill

In December 2012 Caritas supported the private member’s bill of Rino Tirikatene which proposed regarding all workers aged 16 and under as employees rather than self-employed contractors.  This was a recommendation made by Caritas in our 2007 Delivering the Goods report of children’s delivery work.  Unfortunately the Bill was defeated at its first reading and did not proceed to Select Committee.  Lisa Beech’s Opinion piece in the New Zealand Herald summarises the issues at stake, read it here.
