Submission on the Inquiry into the Price of Milk
- Milk is an essential element of the New Zealand diet to ensure the health and wellbeing of New Zealand children and their families
- The Select Committee needs to consider whether this is a matter of the market operating efficiently but not providing equitable outcomes, or whether there are issues of market failure of monopoly.
- If the efficient operation of the market does not provide an equitable outcome for New Zealanders, we believe government action is required and justified to ensure that New Zealand households have access to essential food supplies which are produced locally in our own country.
- The inquiry needs to strongly keep in mind the consequence of the price of milk on the wellbeing of New Zealand’s poorest families.
